MERGEN — Air-Defense System on TUNGA

MERGEN is the air-defense system (HSS) carried on top of TUNGA. It finds a target with its camera, tracks it and locks its aim point onto it; the operator can take over at any moment. It was in the field with TUNGA at TEKNOFEST 2026.

About

Focus

Finding, tracking and accurately aiming at a small target at changing distances from a moving vehicle. Unless the delay between image and turret and the offset between camera and aiming axis are accounted for, the turret either overshoots or misses. It has to work as one system with the vehicle software, and the operator must be able to steer it by hand at any time.

Approach

MERGEN is a two-axis (pan and tilt) turret mounted on TUNGA; the head is driven by stepper motors and carries the camera and the aiming laser. The target's position in the image is converted into angles, and the turret turns and locks on while accounting for how old each measurement is. The offset between camera and laser is corrected for distance, so the aim point holds both near and far. A dedicated switch on the remote lets the operator steer the turret by hand at any time. The turret is connected to TUNGA's mission computer and developed by the TUNGA team.

Axes

A head driven by stepper motors in pan and tilt; camera and aiming laser turn together.

Autonomous lock-on

Finds the target in the image, tracks it and locks the aim point on while compensating for delay.

One system with TUNGA

The turret is wired into TUNGA's software and the operator can take over from the remote. See the vehicle on the TUNGA page.
